Orion Pulse 150i – Pulse arc and resistance welder
CD1000DPM2 – 1000ws capacitive discharge resistance welder
WH1125A, opposed air actuated weld head
1/8″copper upper and lower electrodes (flat tips)
High force springs
1awg weld cables
Orion 150i Welds:
The Orion Pulse 150i can quickly and easily place a single weld to keep the adjustment collar in place. We used a 1mm tungsten electrode with a tapered tip that is slightly blunted. Argon shielding gas is used and set at 10psi for ideal coverage. An alligator grounding clip is attached to the piece prior to attempting welds.
The Orion is set to Micro Mode at 25ws energy with Sloped Agitation enabled (a high frequency energy overlay that helps increase penetration). The standard ignition sequence is selected for these welds. The hydraulic oil causes some cosmetic bubbling of the weld puddle but does not seem to have an effect on the strength of the weld.
The collar can also be welded in place using a resistance welder coupled with a weld head. The WH1125A is configured with 1/8″ copper upper and lower electrodes with flat tips. The spring force is set to 20lbs for the welds pictured to help ensure contact between the threads during the weld.
The CD1000DP performs the welds with Pulse 1 off, Pulse 2 set at 1000ws, and the Total Energy set at 1000ws. The oil did not seem to have an adverse effect on the resistance welds.
Both of the systems above are capable of quickly performing these welds. The touch screen user interface of the Orion 150i makes it easy to quickly dial in settings, and the CD1000DP can be a simple process for operators to learn once it is set up correctly. The energy settings can be adjusted to fit your desired weld characteristics as you experiment further with your product.
