This video shows simple implementation of encoder based anemometer. We used paper cups and straws to make a light weight anemometer.
Autonics incremental encoder is used to know the angular step count made by the anemometer in one second. The encoder has an accuracy of 2000 pulse per revolution. Pulse count is read by an NI USB-6008 DAQ card.
Using a simple calculation of circumference of the anemometer and the number of pulse/sec, one can estimate the linear speed or wind speed (m/s).
A LabView GUI has been implemented to read the pulse count from DAQ card. The obtained pulse count is converted to wind speed. Real time pulse count and wind speed is plotted graphically on LabView GUI.
We tested this setup with dummy wind source (manually revolving the shaft) for one hour. This setup responded quite well, even for small scale movements.
Later we tested it in outdoor, under real conditions. We recorded the wind speed for approximately 45 minutes. Average wind speed is found to be 0.2 m/s.
Instead of an Autonics encoder one can use an incremental optical encoder (printed type) with an LED & photo-diode / LDR combination. This is a cost effective solution if you don’t own a commercial encoder. Special thanks to my buddy Tarun Kumar Sharma
